Pinch Pot Cut in Half

IMG_8198.jpg

When making my pinch pot, I made it way too thick the fist time. If I made it again I would just pinch more at the bottom to make it thinner, and I would also smooth it out in both the inside and the outside. I didn't really make the whole pot even when it comes to how thick it was, so I would probably be more careful with that as well.

Pinch Pot

I think this pinch pot was one of my favorite things to make. I got my inspiration from Coraline and this one star bowl I saw on Pinterest. It was really challenging to make the star part because I wanted it to look all even and nice but it didn't. Like with my first attempt at a pinch pot, I would just attempt to make it the same thickness all throughout the pot and smooth it out better. I would also redo the spiral in the center and use a small look tool instead of the signing tool I used, I just think it would give it better definition and make it look a lot better than it does, and I would definitely do it when the pot is leather hard instead of still kind of wet.

2 Pinch Pots Together

The two pinch pots together was super hard for me to make because I had just gotten my nails done so forming the bottom of it was just really difficult. I tried smoothing this one out unlike the last two, and for some reason it just wouldn't get smooth so it's still a little bumpy. I also would have put more clear glaze on it because parts of it are nice and shiny but then other parts are just feeling super weird.

Small Sculpture

For my small sculpture, I really wanted to make a whale shark, so I did. I honestly didn't have much inspiration with this piece, I kind of just wanted to see where my hands took the piece. I started with a pinch pot type motion for the mouth and most of the body, and then I sculpted the fins and tail by themselves. I carved out some lines and dots to give it more dimension and detail, and then put on the underglaze when it was bone dry. That was like my biggest mistake because it broke, and I also didn't put on enough underglaze.

Relief Tile

Making my relief tile was actually super fun, until it broke. I also didn't use a slab for this piece, though that might have made it easier. Making the lily pads was actually really simple, I just rolled a ball of clay and flattened it out with my thumb, and then cut out little triangles in it. The fish was probably the hardest part because it was just so small. Making the tail and the fins was just so challenging because I wanted to get the proportions right, but I didn't want it to look bad. For carving the ripples in the water, I really wish I had used a small loop tool because it would have probably looked a lot cleaner. If I were to do anything different I would probably just be more careful with it, because after I set it down when it was bone dry it broke.

Historical Piece

I had probably one of the most challenging experiences ever with this historical piece. I started out by having this great idea to try and make one of those Greek vases, but that was actually a horrible idea. I feel so bad for the Greeks because they had to make them out of coils, because doing that is so awful. So I decided to paint the Starry Night on a bowl. It was so much easier and so much fun because I love painting, and yes it was teacher inspired. It was a challenge though because I had to get the right blue, because we just don't have that many blue underglazes that aren't all dried up. But painting the whole scene on the bowl was so fun, and yes this bowl is a slab. The only thing I would have done different is like filling this one little dip like thing with clay so it wasn't so weird looking.
